The 2026 World Cup is nearing the knockout stages. However, before we move to the Round of 32, several groups are going to need more than just record to determine who gets what placement, who plays who, and where each team will wind up going.

It's a complicated process, but given the size of this World Cup tournament, there are obviously a few tiebreakers in place for such an occasion. Since this year's tournament features the largest group of countries ever assembled, there are several groups that might need these tiebreakers to figure out which teams will advance.

Here's an look at what the tiebreakers are and what it could mean for several groups approaching the knockout rounds:

What are the tiebreakers for the 2026 World Cup?

The tiebreakers are as follows in order:

  1. Head-to-head points: Whichever team earned more points (three for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss) will advance
  2. Goal differential: If the teams tied in their match, whichever team had the better differential between goals scored and goals allowed during group play will advance
  3. Overall goals scored: If the goal differential is the same, whichever team scored more total goals will advance
  4. Fair play points: If overall goals are the same, whichever team earned more fair play points (fewer yellow/red cards) will advance
  5. FIFA World Ranking: If fair play points are equal, whichever team is ranked higher in FIFA's official world rankings will earn the top spot

Obviously, it isn't just first-place teams that are worried about tiebreakers. Although there are 12 groups, and thusly 12 third-place teams, only eight of them will advance to the Round of 32. How will those eight teams be determined?

The tiebreakers between intergroup third-place teams are similar, but not entirely the same since those teams obviously never played head-to-head. They are as follows:

  1. Most total points: Third-place teams with the most points will advance first
  2. Best goal differential: If two teams have the same amount of points, the team with the superior goal differential will advance
  3. Overall goals scored: If goal differential is the same, the team with the most total goals advances
  4. Fair Play points: If goal scored is the same, the team with the higher fair play score will advance
  5. FIFA World Ranking: If all else fails, the team with the higher world ranking will advance

Which teams will this affect most?

Obviously, these tiebreakers are of the utmost importance for teams battling for second or third in their groups.

In the most extreme cases though, teams such as Iran and Belgium in Group G are tied after two matches each. Both teams have a goal differential of zero, but Iran currently holds the tiebreaker with two goals across their matches compared to Belgium's one.

Similarly, Uruguay and Cabo Verde are in a similar situation in Group H. Cabo Verde has tied both their matches, same as Uruguay, but Uruguay has three total goals, while Cabo Verde has just two.

However, unfortunately for Uruguay, they still have a game against Spain on their schedule, while Cabo Verde plays last-place Saudi Arabia.
