Is Iran eliminated from 2026 World Cup? Austria-Algeria draw determines fate

June 27, 2026Updated June 28, 2026, 12:15 a.m. ET

Iran didn't lose at the 2026 World Cup – but that still wasn't enough to see it through to the round of 32.

Iran was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup after failing to get the results in needed on Saturday, June 27 to advance to the knockout stages.

Is Iran eliminated from 2026 World Cup?

Yes, Iran has been eliminated from the 2026 World Cup. The country entered play on Saturday needing one of the following three results to advance as one of the top eight third-place teams at the tournament.

  • Ghana to win against Croatia
  • Uzbekistan to win or draw against Congo
  • Austria vs. Algeria not to end in a draw

None of those results came to pass, as Croatia defeated Ghana, Congo beat Uzbekistan and Austria and Algeria played to a 3-3 draw.

As a result, Iran will make an early exit from the 2026 World Cup after narrowly missing out on its first-ever trip to the knockout stage.

How Austria vs. Algeria impacts Iran

The Austria vs. Algeria match was the last to wrap up and served as the final blow to Iran's 2026 World Cup dreams.

The clash between Austria and Algeria determined only which team will finish second in Group J behind Argentina. It also determined whether the group's third-place finisher would have enough points to leapfrog Iran in the third-place standings.

Had either Austria or Algeria emerged with a win, Iran would have been able to advance. The country was guaranteed to have a better goal differential should either third-place finisher finish with three points.

For a moment, it looked like that might happen. Algeria scored a stoppage-time goal to take a lead 3-2 lead on Austria, putting their Group J counterpart on the brink of elimination.

But minutes later, Sasa Kalajdzic scored an equalizer that guaranteed a 3-3 draw at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Saturday night. That result gave Algeria – Group J's current third-place team – four points, which moved it ahead of Iran in the standings.

And so, Iran will head home despite earning points in each of its three group stage matches.
