Looking for clues about how the fight between Ilia Topura and Justin Gaethje will turn out requires only light digging.

Topuria only is undefeated at 17-0, he has fought about half the bouts as has Gaethje, who 27-5. While some might give Gaethje the edge in experience, it just as easily can be interpreted as less wear and tear on Topuria.

At 29, Topuria is eight years younger than the 37-year-old Gaethje.

Gaethje is 5-11, four inches taller than the 5-7 Topuria but has only a one-inch advantage in reach – 70 inches to 69 inches.

Perhaps the most telling clues are recent history. In his past three fights, Topuria has won by knockout against three former UFC champions: Charles Oliveira, Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski.

Gaethje also fought Oliveira, losing by first-round submission in 2022, and Holloway, losing by knockout with one second left in the fifth round.

Topuria has only gone the full five rounds once, in victory over Josh Emmett by unanimous decision in what was the Fight of the Night on the UFC on ABC card in 2023.
