Caitlin Clark, Stephanie White dismiss any discord as Fever win third straight
Heather BurnsUNCASVILLE, CT — A video of Fever coach Stephanie White and Caitlin Clark getting into a verbal disagreement circulated online following an Indiana loss to the Portland Fire on May 30.
Both Clark and White downplayed the exchange on June 1, with Clark chalking the incident up to "two people being competitive" and "two people that really want to win," and nothing more.
Two weeks later, a question about the Fever's team chemistry was asked after their 85-75 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena. Clark, who seemed confused by the inquiry, said: "We're on a three-game win streak, we're doing good."
To whatever supposed division is happening, Clark said: "I think it's speculation. Opinions. I don't know about reports."
Indiana coach Stephanie White then stepped in and vehemently denied any discord.
"I don't think you're talking about journalism," White said. "And so if we're continuing to create news from fans on social media or bots on social media or whatever it may be, that's a problem, right?"
At the time of the viral video of Clark and White disagreeing on the bench, the Fever were 4-4. They have gone 4-1 since and moved into sixth place in the WNBA standings. Indiana also has a 4-1 record in Commissioner's Cup play and have a chance to repeat their in-season tournament title.
Caitlin Clark scored 25 points to lead the Fever over the Suns. She left the game with 22 seconds to go after getting a technical foul. Clark said she deserved it.
Earlier in the quarter the team was called for a delay of game technical when Clark tried to gather the ball with a soccer-style kick to herself and it went under the scorer's table.
“The delay of game made no sense. It felt like (referee) Tyler (Mirkovich) wanted to insert himself into the game, and that was ridiculous,” Clark said. "... So, you can ask Tyler, I don't I don't agree with that."
Clark is averaging 19.9 points and 8.2 assists. She has back-to-back game with at least 25 points and five assists.
