Apple just raised its prices on iPads, MacBooks. Here's why
Greta CrossApple has raised the prices of several popular products, citing an influx of AI data centers as the cause.
On Thursday, June 25, Apple increased the price of numerous products, including the MacBook Neo, the tech giant's cheapest laptop, MacBook Air, iPad Mini and Apple TV. As artificial intelligence data centers continue to expand throughout the country, the tech industry has been forced to adapt to an unprecedented demand for memory and storage.
"We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly," according to an Apple statement obtained by USA TODAY. "We have shielded our customers from these increases so far, but we have now reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on a number of products, including today’s increases for iPad and Mac. We know this is not welcome news, and we are working tirelessly to find solutions."
As AI continues to grow, there are more than 4,300 data centers across the United States, according to global data center directory Data Center. Many of those facilities are being met with resistance: In May, Gallup reported 70% of Americans oppose the construction of data centers in their communities, with 48% in "strong opposition."
The price increases come a few weeks after Apple held its annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8. During its keynote presentation at the event, Apple introduced iOS 27, which will rely more heavily on AI.
