Fortnite refunding customers for D4vd cosmetics. How to get money back
Amaris EncinasFortnite is offering refunds to players who purchased in-game items connected to the singer D4vd, who is facing a murder charge in the death of a 14-year-old girl.
D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, was arrested on April 16 in connection with the slaying of Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Burke, who pleaded not guilty, was charged with first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child and corpse mutilation.
Rivas Hernandez's remains were located in Los Angeles in September, over a year after she was reported missing by her family.
Epic Games, which owns and developed the co-op sandbox survival game, confirmed in an April 26 post on X that it was issuing an "immediate self-service refund" to any player who purchased "D4vd cosmetics" after an unverified claim about a potential refund began to circulate on social media.
Some players have called on Epic to remove emotes and cosmetics associated with D4vd entirely, saying that keeping the features in the game was bad form.

"We hear the concerns," Epic Games said in the X post. "We have a bunch of changes we’re rolling out over time."
"The first one will be available on Tuesday April 28th, when anyone who purchased one of these items will be able to get an immediate self-service refund. And, right now, players who request refunds for D4vd cosmetics via player support can be refunded," the company added.
It wasn't immediately clear if Epic has plans to remove D4vd cosmetics or music from the game entirely.
Epic Games directed USA TODAY to the X posts it had authored when asked to provide comment.
What's D4vd's connection to Fortnite?

According to Polygon, Burke started making music for Fortnite montages. His song "Locked & Loaded" was dubbed the official anthem for the 2025 Fortnite Global Championship.
Fortnite previously released "d4vd's Locker Bundle," which contained cosmetics that D4vd picked out. Additional features, including The Feel It Emote and Trophy Drop Emote as well as two "jam tracks" by D4vd, were also released.
Some of the items, which are still present in the game, were won by participating in the "D4vd Cup," a duos-only Battle Royale tournament in August 2024, Polygon reported.
The Feel It Emote, What Are you Waiting For Jam Track, Locked & Loaded Jam Track and the Trophy Drop Emote have not been for sale since September, Epic Games told USA TODAY.
How to get a refund
Players who purchased D4vd cosmetics or emotes and are interested in getting their money back can "now get a refund on these purchases without a player support ticket by visiting their account settings."
Players who obtained the visual, interactive perks by means other than purchase can exchange it for "equivalent V-Bucks" by contacting Epic Games support.

The Feel It and Trophy Drop Emotes will be added to the "Confrontational Emotes list" on May 14, a setting that allows players to not see certain Emotes "that are sometimes used in confrontational ways."
