As the country heads into the Fourth of July weekend, President Donald Trump unveiled a new rendering of a special commemorative U.S. passport bearing his portrait to mark America's 250th anniversary.

"The U.S.A.’s New Passport, which says, 'Welcome, but be good!'" Trump wrote alongside the designs in a June 26 post on Truth Social.

The new passport shared by Trump features an image of him standing over the Resolute Desk with the text of the original Declaration of Independence in the background and his signature on the bottom on one of the pages, while the other page has an image of the "The Declaration of Independence" painting by John Trumbull.

The White House also shared an image of the new passport with the caption: "PATRIOT PASSPORT."

The new version of the passport was also seen on display at the State Department exhibit on the fourth day of the Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The 16-day event is part of the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration and backed by Freedom 250, a public-private partnership set up by Trump to promote the nation's milestone birthday. It was initially billed as a major music festival.

Trump kicked off the festivities on June 24 with a rally during which he highlighted anti-transgender policies, praised immigration agents implementing his deportation push and promoted a preliminary peace deal with Iran.

The photograph of Trump in the new design appears to be a rendering of the president’s portrait from the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, taken by official White House photographer Daniel Torok, and is different from the previous edition released by the U.S. State Department earlier this year.

In a June 29 email to USA TODAY, the State Department said it "is proud to release a limited-edition commemorative passport that celebrates America's 250th anniversary."

"This isn't just a travel document – it's a piece of history that Americans can carry with pride as they travel the world, showing what American leadership looks like," it added.

People view the portrait of U.S. President Donald Trump, taken by official White House photographer Daniel Torok which is the basis of a proposed U.S. Mint semiquincentennial commemorative gold coin design, on display at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington on March 19, 2026.

The State Department confirmed the special limited-edition U.S. passport bearing Trump's portrait to USA TODAY earlier this year in April.

"As the United States celebrates America's 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed U.S. Passports to commemorate this historic occasion," State Department Spokesperson Tommy Pigott previously told USA TODAY in a statement.

"These passports will feature customized artwork and enhanced imagery while maintaining the same security features that make the U.S. passport the most secure documents in the world," Pigott continued.

The back cover will feature a gold rendering of the flag, with "250" centered within a 13-star circle.

How to get a passport featuring Trump

The anniversary passports will be available only at the Washington Passport Agency for American citizens applying for a new identification document, while supplies last, according to the State Department. About 40,000 of the special-edition passports are expected to be released and will be available starting July 6, 2026, according to the State Department. There will be no extra fee to get one with the new design.

The specially designed passport won't be the default version issued to everyone, and it will only be available while supplies last.
