Your DCA flight could be affected this summer. Here's why
From July 4 festivities to air shows, several DCA flights might be affected by temporary airspace closures.
Travelers planning to fly to or from the nation’s capital in the next month or so could face flight disruptions, especially at Reagan National Airport around July 4.
“Ticketed passengers on flights at Reagan National Airport (DCA) this summer are advised to closely monitor the status of their flights for adjustments during America 250 celebrations in Washington, D.C. Many events will include downtown flyovers or other aerial displays such as fireworks or parachute jumps, which will affect flights periodically at Reagan National,” a statement from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said.
The authority added that there are no flights scheduled at DCA after noon on July 4, and that terminal services will be reduced until the flight schedule resumes on July 5.
Other disruptions around DCA are expected throughout the summer.

These are the major events that the airport authority warns could cause headaches for travelers.
- June 24-25 Great American State Fair opening
- June 28 Military Appreciation Day
- July 3-4 Independence Day rehearsals and celebrations
- July 10 Great American State Fair closeout flyover and parachute jump
- August 22-23 Grand Prix near the National Mall
“In some instances, airline flight schedules have already been adjusted to avoid pre-planned airspace closure times and minimize impacts on travelers. In other cases, DCA flights may be delayed by temporary holds as coordinated through air traffic control communications. Weather also could impact flights during this time,” MWAA’s statement said.
Travelers whose flights are disrupted should keep an eye out for change fee waivers and rebooking options from their airline.
