Friday's forecast: Heat wave for central U.S.

High heat will scorch the central U.S. on Friday. Severe storms are possible in New England and the northern Plains.

Central U.S.: Temperatures will soar into the upper 90s and low 100s for much of the central U.S. on Friday. Numerous heat advisories and warnings are in effect from the Gulf states northward to the northern Plains and Upper Midwest on Friday.  A few severe storms are forecast in the Dakotas and Montana.

East: The blistering heat and humidity will encroach toward the eastern seaboard on Friday. Some severe storms could also rattle portions of northern New England. Some showers and thunderstorms are also likely from parts of the western Gulf Coast to the Southeast on Friday.

West: Some rain is likely over parts of the Pacific Northwest through Friday evening. The Southwest and California will be very hot and dry.
