You may be wondering what's under the hood of the new Chevrolet Blazer EV. Because electric vehicles have less parts than traditional cars, several automakers have popularized the concept of having a second storage space under the front hood that's called a "frunk."
General Motors, which owns the Chevrolet brand, says in a post on its website that the 2026 Chevy Blazer EV does not have a frunk. But company said the Blazer EV "does have up to 59.1 cu. ft. of max cargo capacity."
"There is also hidden storage under the rear cargo floor to help keep items from view," the company added.
The USA TODAY Cars team drove the Chevrolet Blazer EV and we took a look at what actually under the hood of the EV, since it has doesn't have a "frunk."
What is a 'frunk,' and why doesn't the Blazer EV have one?
The concept of a "frunk" was first popularized by Tesla in 2012, according to JD Power.
Tesla started using the area under the hood of its electric cars for storage because its batteries at the time were larger and stored in the rear of the vehicles.
The concept was later adopted by other electric automakers, even as battery technology improved and they became smaller, including GM with some of its larger EVs such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Hummer EV.
GM spokeswoman Sanaz Marbley said in an email the Blazer EV has an "X76 drive unit is in the middle, including the electric motor, gearset, inverter and other integrated power electronics."
"The Blazer EV’s battery pack is packaged low in the chassis, between the axles, and integrated into the vehicle’s EV architecture — so it supports a low center of gravity, handling and overall vehicle stiffness, not just energy storage," she said.
An EV typically has a lot fewer moving parts than a traditional cars. In just the drivetrain alone, an EV typically has about 20-25 parts, compared to over 200 for a gas-powered car, according to the Alpha Motor Corp.
