So what is 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' actually about?
Marketing for "The Mandalorian and Grogu" has kept the story tightly under wraps. Here's a spoiler-free rundown of what to know about the new "Star Wars" movie.
Patrick RyanWe’re just days away from a new “Star Wars” movie hitting theaters..
But if you’ve seen any of the purposefully vague trailers for “The Mandalorian and Grogu” (in theaters May 22), they will tell you zilch about is actually going on in the highly anticipated film, aside from the fact that it’s a perilous new journey for bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), aka Mandalorian, and his wide-eyed ward Grogu, fondly known as Baby Yoda.
Having now seen the movie for ourselves, he’s a spoiler-free rundown of what you can expect from the latest trek to a galaxy far, far away:
What is the plot of the new ‘Mandalorian’ movie?

The premise of the film is fairly straightforward and doesn’t require any prior knowledge of the TV show. In short, the movie takes place after the fall of the Galactic Empire in “Return of the Jedi,” as the New Republic works to maintain peace even as warlords and gangsters run amok. The New Republic enlists Din Djarin to rescue chiseled young slug Rotta the Hutt (voiced by Jeremy Allen White), who has been captured and plunged into the seedy criminal underworld of the Outer Rim, where he is forced to fight gladiator-style matches against vicious monsters.
Who is the villain in the new ‘Star Wars’ movie?

The film’s big bad isn’t revealed until later in the story, so you’ll just have to wait and see. But in general, look out for galactic mafiosos and rival bounty hunters who have a price on Din Djarin’s head.
How does Baby Yoda play into all of this?

As in the TV series, Grogu is mostly along for the ride to look cute: hitching a ride on Mando’s back, using the Force, and taking the smallest bites of blue macarons that you’ve ever seen. But the Baby also gets to step up and be a hero, with an extended sequence where the father-son dynamic is very much reversed.
Who else is in ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu?’

Sigourney Weaver makes her “Star Wars” debut as Colonel Ward, a pilot who dispenses orders to Mando. Jabba the Hutt’s twin cousins set the plot into motion with a desperate plea to find Rotta. Martin Scorsese voices the stressed-out owner of a food stand, and Shirley Henderson is back to voice an adorable bunch of bearded alien Anzellans, who we were first met with droid maker Babu Frik in “The Rise of Skywalker.”
Is ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ streaming on Disney+?
No streaming release date has been announced yet for the new “Star Wars” movie, although it will open in theaters nationwide May 22. For comparison, last year's Marvel movie "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" arrived on Disney+ roughly four months after its theatrical release.
