Singer Cody Simpson reveals 'serious' vocal cord hemorrhage

Cody Robert Simpson attends the Elton John AIDS Foundation's Academy Awards Viewing Party on March 15, 2026, in West Hollywood, California.

Cody Simpson is revealing the serious medical issue that has left him temporarily unable to sing amid his return to music.

The Australian singer,29, shared in a May 11 Instagram post that he "discovered a serious hemorrhage on one of my vocal cords" just over a month ago.

"It occurred due to my overzealousness in the studio singing through a sinus infection I didn't know I had. Assumed it was just fatigue and kept showing up to the studio until one day I could no longer sing. I've now been on and off vocal rest for weeks, cancelling TV and radio performances for 'Baby Blue' in the process," he wrote, referring to his new single.

"This has also affected my ability to complete the album and polish up the next singles," Simpson added.

Simpson shared the news in the caption of a photo that showed him sitting in what looked like a doctor's office. The star is coming off the release of a pair of new songs, "Baby Blue" and "When It Comes to Loving You," in March. He has been teasing the release of a new studio album, which would be his first since 2022.

Simpson said in his post that he has been "prescribed another 2 weeks of silence in hopes of avoiding a surgery which demands a much longer recovery process," noting that he is still in the studio working on new music, but focusing on writing lyrics and melodies because he can't use his voice at the moment.

"Where there’s a will, there’s a way," he concluded.

In an Instagram story, Simpson praised his "amazing" voice doctor, who he said he has been seeing since he started singing professionally. "I feel that it's finally time for me to share what I've been going through the past month," he wrote before getting into his health update.

Cody Simpson performs during the Australian Open on Jan. 18, 2026, in Melbourne, Australia.

Simpson released his debut single, "iYiYi," in 2010, following it up with his first extended play "4 U" later that year. He put out the studio albums "Paradise" in 2012, "Surfers Paradise" in 2013, "Free" in 2015 and, most recently, "Cody Simpson" in 2022.

Simpson has been a contestant on "Dancing with the Stars" and "The Masked Singer Australia," and he also pursued a career as a swimmer.

Simpson recently told People magazine that "now felt like the perfect time to return to music thanks to where pop music, and music in general, is right now," continuing, "Pop is in the best place it's been in years and I was really excited to come back and play in the scene again."
