Pittsburgh is throwing an early birthday party for America's 250th with a sold-out concert headlined by American rapper Nelly and rock band Third Eye Blind.
The show, part of America250PA's free concert series, is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, one week week before an Independence Day concert series at the same location. It's part of a years-long effort to celebrate not just America's 250th anniversary as a whole, but also Pennsylvania's specific role in the country's foundation.
Here's what to know about this weekend's show.
Nelly, Third Eye Blind, Frzy to Pittsburgh with America250PA
Nelly and Third Eye Blind will headline America250PA's sold-out stop in Pittsburgh on Saturday, June 27.
Special guest Frzy will join the two musical acts at Point State Park for a concert with a theme of celebrating educators and innovators.
America250PA's website showed the venue for the free concert already reached capacity by early June. See the event website for more details and to check for updates.
Free concerts throughout Pennsylvania celebrate America's 250th anniversary
The America250PA free concert series kicked off in University Park on May 23 and will wrap up in Pittsburgh after stopping in Erie, Hershey and Wilkes-Barre.
Headliners in the series included Cole Swindell, The Fray, The Avett Brothers and Lady A, with special guests Gabby Barrett, the West Point Band, First to Eleven, Mike Patton, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, En Vogue and Carson Kressley.
The concert series is one of the numerous events organized by America250PA to commemorate America's 250th anniversary and the Commonwealth's role in the country's foundation.
Planning for these celebrations kicked off all the way back in 2018, when Pennsylvania's legislature and governor established the Pennsylvania Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial, or America250PA, to commemorate both the United State's 250th anniversary and Pennsylvania's part in it, according to the commission's website. In 2021, it became the official state partner of the America 250 national effort.
