Bottled water recalled over black substance. See affected states.

Updated Jan. 16, 2026, 12:07 p.m. ET

Supermarket and grocery retailer Meijer has recalled over 38,000 gallons of water due to a black substance found in the bottles.

The bottles were recalled due to a “floating black foreign substance in the product,” Meijer shared in a recent enforcement report shared on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s website.

The Michigan-based grocery retailer initiated the recall on Nov. 13, and the 1-gallon bottles of steam-distilled water were sold in plastic jugs in six states.

Meijer said in its announcement that 38,043 gallons of water have been recalled.

The bottles contain 128 fluid ounces of water (1 gallon or 3.78 liters), packaged in a plastic jug with a red plastic lid.
