A total of 41 people across the United States may have been exposed to hantavirus as part of the deadly outbreak that killed three passengers on the MV Hondius cruise ship, officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said during a May 14 briefing.

While officials evacuated passengers from the ship and are working to quell further spread, some people were unknowingly exposed to the virus before the outbreak was identified.

Among Americans affected by the outbreak, 18 were passengers on the ship, while several others were in proximity to infected individuals during their travels.

The American cruise passengers are now in quarantine in facilities in Nebraska and Georgia, with all of them now testing negative for hantavirus.

One passenger in Nebraska who initially had an inconclusive test result has now tested negative, Spain's Ministry of Health said in a May 13 X post. Additionally, one of the two passengers sent to Atlanta was initially symptomatic but tested negative for the Andes variant as of May 12, per HHS.

There are no positive hantavirus cases in the United States tied to the outbreak as of May 14. Here's a look at which states have stated they are are monitoring exposures.
