Nasal spray sold nationwide recalled by Bayer. See affected products

April 30, 2026Updated May 1, 2026, 12:44 p.m. ET

A widely used over-the-counter nasal spray is being recalled over labeling concerns.

Bayer is recalling about 786,100 travel-size bottles of Afrin Original Nasal Spray after federal regulators flagged the packaging as a possible danger to children.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on Thursday, April 30, citing concerns that the 6 ml bottles are not properly child-resistant.

Bayer said the recall is voluntary and related to a labeling problem, not the product’s safety or quality. The company said the nasal spray is safe when used as directed in children ages 6 and older.

Here's what to know about the recall.

What products are included the nasal spray recall?

The recall applies to unexpired Travel Size Afrin Original Nasal Spray bottles in the 6 ml (one-fifth fluid ounce) size.

Bottles include lot numbers:

  • 230361
  • 240822
  • 241198
  • 250066
  • 250152
  • 250646
  • 250831

The bottles are labeled “Afrin Original Nasal Spray” on the front, along with the size marking. The lot number is printed as a six-digit code followed by an expiration date in “YYYYMMM” format.

No other Afrin products or sizes are included in the recall.

Why is the nasal spray being recalled? Were any injuries reported?

According to Bayer, the recall involves a labeling failure in which the packaging does not include the statement “Package Not Child-Resistant” under federal requirements for this type of product.

The affected bottles do not meet those standards and lack required warning labels for noncompliant packaging, officials said. The bottles include a “Keep out of reach of children” warning but do not contain the "package not child-resistant" required federal labeling statement.

No incidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the recall, the product safety commission said.

Where was the recalled nasal spray sold?

The recalled sprays were sold nationwide at convenience stores and travel hubs, including airports, from September 2024 through April 2026.

They retailed for $7 to $9.

Bayer said it distributes the product in bulk to U.S. distributors, which then supply retailers, and the company does not have visibility into which retailers or states ultimately received the product. Bayer also said it stopped distributing the product in February 2026.

What should consumers do if they bought the recalled nasal spray?

Consumers are urged to immediately secure the product out of sight and reach of children.

To receive a refund, customers should:

  • Visit Bayer’s recall web form online.
  • Submit a photo of the product.
  • Dispose of the bottle after submission.

For assistance, consumers can contact Bayer at 800-317-2165, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET. More information is also available through the recall page linked on Afrin’s official website.
