Greta CrossWith Halloween a little over a month away, retailers and customers alike are stocking up on sweets, whether it be candy corn, larger-than-life chocolate bars or sticky, sour gummies.
Analyzing its grocery orders that included candy in 2024, Instacart found each state's Halloween candy preferences. At the top of the list, taking the title as America's Favorite Halloween Candy, was Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Peanut M&M's and Kit Kat were close follow-ups, and Sour Patch Kids, Milky Way and Haribo Goldbears also made the list.

What is your state's unique favorite candy?
Though Reese's Peanut Butter Cups took home the national title, each state has its own candy quirks, too. Candy corn appeared to dominate more throughout the Midwest and South, while Sour Patch Kids were the most popular in the Northeast. According to Instacart's Sweet Tooth study, Utah claimed the crown for the most candy purchased in October 2024. Utah Instacart shoppers bought candy 50.7% more often than the national average. Wyoming, Oregon, Idaho and Nebraska also had high candy sales.
On the other end of the stick, Hawaii, Florida and California had the lowest amount of candy sales through Instacart in October 2024.
How do different states feel about candy corn?
The classic Halloween symbol is also great at dividing the masses.
Mississippi shoppers couldn't get enough candy corn last year, buying a whopping 92% more of the sweet treat than the national average, according to the Instacart study. Nebraska wasn't far behind at 91%.
On the flip side, Hawaii shoppers ordered the least amount of candy corn, 55% less than the national average, according to the Instacart study.
