Does your Target look different? Over 130 stores are being remodeled
Your local Target store may soon look a little different.
That is because the retailer recently announced it will spend approximately $5 billion to remodel more than 130 in addition to opening 30 new stores in priority markets in what the company is calling a "bigger transformation for our stores than at any point in the past decade."
The markets the company is focusing on for the new stores include: Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Charlotte, Chicago, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington DC.
The remodels will feature updated layouts the company says are easier to navigate, making for a "more intuitive" shopping experience. Some of the new features at the newly remodeled stores will include:
- An expanded dry grocery selection, with some locations also getting larger fresh and frozen foods sections
- Modern decor and fixtures with specialty LED lighting
- Updated spaces and expanded services to support Order Pickup, Drive Up and Exchanges & Returns, in addition to updates to traditional checkout and self-checkout lanes
- Modernized guest amenities, including restrooms and designated nursing spaces
- In some stores, Target is introducing natural refrigeration systems, more efficient lighting and HVAC systems that help reduce emissions

“These investments are all about making Target an even easier, more inspiring and friendly place to shop,” says Laurie Mahowald, senior vice president, Target Properties, in a news release. “We’re evolving our stores in ways that reflect how guests shop today — from more intuitive layouts to expanded assortments — while also strengthening the role our stores play in fulfillment and our long-term growth.”
Target told USA TODAY that what is new for guests will vary by location, as will the timing of each remodel.
