Daily Briefing: Trump's China schedule

Updated May 14, 2026, 7:02 a.m. ET

Welcome to the Daily Briefing. Start the day with these stories:

Nicole Fallert here, bringing you the news to know on Thursday, from President Donald Trump's schedule today in China to one influencer's experience on a cruise ship hit by hantavirus.

What to expect from Trump's visit to China

President Donald Trump is in China Thursday amid a two-day, pomp-filled visit and talks on Iran. He is scheduled to participate in a bilateral meeting with President Xi, a state banquet and a working lunch before departing Friday afternoon.

Who's going with Trump? Eric Trump, his wife Lara Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and tech executive Elon Musk, who is part of a delegation of more than a dozen billionaire CEOs, are all accompanying Trump.

What's on the docket? Trump's aggressive tariff agenda, the ongoing U.S. war in Iran, the future of tech and U.S. military support for Taiwan are issues expected to take center stage at Trump's face-to-face meeting with Xi.

More news to know now

  • Something weird is happening with rain. New research shows that although the world is seeing more rain overall, it's also getting drier at the same time.
  • Big SCOTUS decisions loom: Before adjourning for the summer, the court must still rule on more than 30 cases, including a few that test Trump’s expansive view of presidential power.
  • Shake-up at the FDA: Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary resigned following a weekslong pressure campaign from anti-abortion activists for not moving quicker to restrict mifepristone and a clash inside the White House for his refusal to approve flavored vapes and nicotine products, according to reports.

Movies

Say it like 'can'

Seth Rogen, Samira Wiley, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Abbi Jacobson pose during the "Tangles" photocall at the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals on May 14, 2026 in Cannes, France.

Pronounce this French city correctly to your coworkers and get culture clout: Hollywood's biggest stars are stepping out in Cannes, France, on Thursday for the 79th Cannes International Film Festival. Nothing like the south of France in springtime.

Hantavirus outbreak

He was on the hantavirus cruise

Boston influencer Jake Rosmarin was one of 18 Americans aboard the MV Hondius, the cruise ship at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak. Rosmarin is currently asymptomatic. But, out of concern for the safety of others, including his fiancé back home, he says he intends to quarantine in Nebraska for a full 42 days, the approximate incubation period of the virus. Rosmarin spoke to USA TODAY on May 12, Day 2 in quarantine. He hasn't settled into a routine yet. He's not sure what a day-in-the-life will entail once he does.
