How long could Penn Station fire repairs take? Here's what we know
A track blaze late Thursday morning has had lasting effects on Penn Station's train operations, from Amtrak to the Long Island Railroad.
Riders faced a rocky commute early Friday, May 15, with a timeframe for repairs still unclear.
Here's what to know on the impact of the fire.
Thursday's Penn Station fire
A call was first received about a fire on the tracks at 11:22 a.m. May 14, according to the FDNY, at 31st Street between 7th and 8th Avenue. The fire department said no injuries were reported and the blaze was under control around 1 p.m.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority confirmed that the fire took place on Amtrak tracks, and that Amtrak crews were responding for repairs. Amtrak could not immediately provide a timeframe to USA TODAY on when repairs are expected to be finished, and were still experiencing delays to services as of Friday morning.
As of Friday afternoon, NJ TRANSIT Midtown Direct service is still being diverted to Hoboken Terminal, and will for the remainder of the service day.
