Map shows which Pittsburgh roads will close to cars on June 28, July 26
Four hours of road closures on two summer days will impact access to some Pittsburgh roads.
Finch Walker- OpenStreetsPGH will close certain Pittsburgh roads to vehicles for two one-day events this summer.
- The first event is on June 28, covering a route from Market Square to the South Side.
- A second event will occur on July 26, with a route from the Strip District to Lawrenceville.
This summer, large swathes of roads throughout Pittsburgh will open up for pedestrians — while temporarily blocking drivers.
For two one-day periods in June and July, OpenStreetsPGH, hosted by Bike Pittsburgh, will shut down areas in Pittsburgh that typically see busy traffic to allow cyclists, runners and walkers and other pedestrians to take over the roads. Event participants of all ages and abilities are invited to join in however they like, whether that be by biking along the road, dancing with friends in the streets or exploring free fitness classes at the event's wellness hubs.
The only caveat: No vehicles are allowed.
Here's when and where the event will take place.
When is OpenStreetsPGH?
OpenStreetsPGH will take place on Sunday, June 28, with a route from Pittsburgh's Market Square to the South Side. A second event from the Strip District to Lawrenceville happens on Sunday, July 26 . On both days, the events are scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
OpenStreetsPGH, a car-free event, takes inspiration from the global open streets movement, according to the event's website. Cities around the world host similar events with the goal of getting people outside and engaged in healthy activities, participating in car-free transportation and connecting with their communities.
What Pittsburgh roads will close for OpenStreets PGH this summer?
For the OpenStreetsPGH event on June 28, a two-mile stretch in Downtown Pittsburgh will be closed to vehicle traffic. A car-free route spanning more than three miles will run from the Strip District to Lawrenceville in July.
On June 28, watch for road closures around Forbes Avenue through the Armstrong Tunnel, across the 10th Street Bridge and along East Carson Street. During the July event, you'll want to avoid driving near Smallman Street, 34th Street and Butler Street.
While the main roads will be closed, pedestrians should watch for traffic at intersections.
