2 men steal 96 bananas from a Wawa, police say. 'Yes… 96 bananas.'

Updated April 8, 2026, 5:56 p.m. ET

An unusual theft at a Pennsylvania Wawa has police going bananas for a pair of potassium bandits.

According to the Hatboro Police Department, two men are accused of stealing approximately 96 bananas from a Wawa convenience store in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, some 17 miles north of Philadelphia.

"Yes… 96 bananas," police reiterated.

A Wawa store is seen on May 29, 2024, in Washington, DC.

The theft happened over the weekend on April 4, and police said the pair fled the scene with the fruits stuffed in a black Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Following the release of surveillance footage, police said the pair was identified.

Hatboro police told USA TODAY on April 8 that "the banana bandits were identified and made immediate restitution to the business."

"Our investigators didn't monkey around and located the bandits in short order," police said in their statement. "We do not expect any further monkey business from the individuals responsible."

Suspects told police 'it was a drunken mistake,' detective says

Conner Dilks, a detective sergeant with the Hatboro Police Department, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that the two suspects took responsibility for the banana theft, saying "it was a drunken mistake."

“I haven’t been doing this super long — been here for like nine years — but this is the first time someone’s stolen more than one or two bananas,” Dilks said.

Neither man was taken into custody after meeting the demands of the Wawa location, Dilks told the outlet.

“Wawa just requested that they pay the full price of the bananas and they wouldn’t be charged, and that’s what happened,” the detective said.

And for the 96 bananas? Authorities are unsure what happened to the fruits, according to Dilks.
