The blast happened at about 4:20 p.m. local time at a shipyard on Staten Island, the city’s southernmost borough. The explosion happened after firefighters were called to the scene at 3:30 p.m. after reports of workers being trapped in a confined space, according to FDNY.
At least 16 people were injured in the incident and taken to local hospitals. Three people had serious injuries: two firefighters and one non-firefighter. Two firefighters had moderate injuries, department officials said. The rest of the injuries were considered minor.
Fire officials did not immediately respond to requests for information on the cause of the blast.
