California shapes US politics, culture. Should it? Tell us. | Opinion

I was born in California. I love visiting. But I don't pay the high rents or taxes. Billionaire Elon Musk has left. Others are flocking there. What are your thoughts on the state? Take our poll below.

I was born on a naval base in California. Once my family left Port Hueneme, we still visited frequently to see family in the San Francisco Bay area.

My take on California? I'm a thumbs-up: great climate, stunningly beautiful natural environment, lively culture, great food (and wine).

But I never had to pay phenomenally high rent there, or buy gas or navigate its infamous traffic for any longer than a few days. I also haven't, in any significant way, dealt with its homelessness, politics or other points friction that critics cite.

Now with California Gov. Gavin Newsom getting serious presidential attention – and proudly ex-Californian billionaire Elon Musk continuing to do weird and fascinating things – it's a good time to consider what we think of the country's most populous state. An economic and cultural dynamo? Or a liberal hellhole? (Maybe something in between?)

Does California make us worse? Or better?

And what are its greatest attributes? On the whole, is it a boon or our a bane to our country?

You can send us your opinion in one of several ways: Use the form below, send us an email to [email protected] with the subject line “Forum California” or leave us a voicemail at (202) 655-3923.
