Khamzat Chimaev and Sean Strickland proved to be dedicated and ruthlesss trash talkers during the buildup to their middleweight title fight.

But Strickland prevailed inside the octagon.

Strickland beat Chimaev by split decision and won the UFC middleweight championship at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The judges scored it 47-48, 48-47, 48-47 in favor of Strickland.

Both men were bleeding after the fight, but the bad blood appeared to be gone. After Strickland was declared the winner, Chimaev wrapped the championship belt around his foe’s waist.

“I’m hitting him with everything and he just keeps coming forward,’’ Strickland said. “Crazy.’’

Strickland relied heavily on his left-hand jab and later said he separated his right shoulder while training the week of the fight. But his main concern immediately following the five-round bout seemed to be expressing regret for offensive remarks he made during the buildup to the fight.

“Hey, I just want to apologize to my American fans, to my Muslim fans, to my Christian fans,’’ he said. “I went too (expletive) hard. I’ll admit it. I respect all you guys. ... I should be a better example but I try to sell these fights for you (expletives).’’

Strickland handed Chimaev his first career loss. The 32-year-old Russian fell to 15-1 while Strickland, the 35-year-old American, improved to 31-7.

UFC CEO Dana White said Chimaev, who had trouble making weight for this fight, no longer wants to fight as a middleweight (185 pounds). Instead he'll be moving up to light heavyweight (205 pounds).

UFC 328 fight predictions

Lou Finocchiaro, VSiN: Chimaev vs. Strickland will go OVER 2.5 rounds

Finocchiaro writes: "This fight will be much more competitive than any we have seen Chimaev undertake, simply because of Strickland’s fortitude, his natural middleweight build, and his ability to out-crazy anyone in the organization, including Chimaev. Strickland’s going to need to weather a furious first two rounds, then he’ll look to turn the tables on this monster and bully this bully."

Robert Whittaker: "Chimaev is going to run [Strickland] over"

The former undisputed middleweight champion believes Chimaev has the edge in this one. Whittaker has fought Chimaev before and has seen what he brings to the ring. Whittaker said, "having been in there with Chimaev and having seen what Chimaev can do once he gets his hands on you, and he will because he shoots from so far away and he commits wholeheartedly, he will get you to the mat."

Chimaev gave Strickland his props, saying "[Strickland] talks a big game; he almost convinces me that he can do it." At the end of the day though, Whittaker was still rolling with Chimaev.
