Samsung is discontinuing its messaging app and transitioning to Google Messages by the summer.

In an End of Service Announcement shared the week of March 30, Samsung said it will discontinue its Samsung Messages application by July. Samsung will transition to Google Messages, and the tech giant is asking users to go ahead and make the switch themselves for an easier transition.

Samsung said the benefits to the move include AI-powered scan detection and spam filters that block unwanted messages; AI-powered features, like Google's Gemini; and multi-device connectivity between phones, tablets and smartwatches. Google Messages also allows for RCS Messaging, internet-based messaging, the company outlined.

Here's what we know about the Samsung switch.

When is Samsung Messages going away?

Samsung Messages will be discontinued in July. Samsung did not provide an exact date as of April 6.

Why is Samsung getting rid of its Messages app?

In its announcement, Samsung did not specifically outline why it is making the switch. USA TODAY reached out to the company for more information.

How to switch from Samsung to Google Messages

Samsung users may receive an in-app notification from Samsung Messages guiding them through the process. Follow on-screen instructions to complete. To switch manually, Samsung provides the following instructions:

  1. Download or open the Google Messages app.
  2. The first time using Google Messages, a pop-up will appear that reads, "To use Messages, make it your default SMS ap." Tap "Set default SMS app."
  3. Select Google Messages, the white icon with the blue conversation bubble.
  4. Tap "Set as default."

Samsung Messages will not be available for download on Galaxy S26 or new devices, Samsung said.

For Samsung users with Android 12 or 13, the Google Messages icon will not automatically add to the home screen dock once the switch is complete. To manually add Google Messages, complete the following steps:

  1. Press and hold the Samsung Messages app in the home screen dock and select "Remove."
  2. Find the Google Messages app. Press and hold on the app and select "Add to home."
  3. Select the Google Messages app and drag onto the home screen dock.

Samsung said in its announcement that users of Samsung devices released before 2022 may experience temporary disruption of RCS conversations. However, this can me mediated if all users switch to Google Messages.

For Samsung users with older generation smartwatches with Tizen OS – watches launched before the Galaxy Watch4 – messaging will no longer be supported on these devices post-Google Messages transition, Samsung said in its announcement.
