A prosthetic leg, a knife and an off-duty TSA officer. What happened next?

An off-duty officer spotted suspicious behavior that led TSA to discover a knife concealed inside a prosthetic leg at airport security.

A passenger at Honolulu International Airport was seen hiding a knife inside their prosthetic leg by an off-duty law enforcement officer, according to officials.

The officer, who was at the airport for personal travel, alerted Lead TSA Officer Raynani Camara, the Transportation Security Administration said in a June 29 news release. Camara then notified Supervisory Officer Michael Bugarin, and the two agents identified the passenger at the security checkpoint and pulled them aside for additional screening.

Bugarin reviewed CCTV footage and found the traveler had "placed an item on his prosthetic leg at the divesture table," according to the release. The prosthetic leg was put through the X-ray scanner, revealing a folding knife in the underside heel of the foot.

The passenger, who remains unidentified by authorities, was denied entry and escorted out of the checkpoint.

"This incident is a powerful reminder that situational awareness is essential at every moment – not just during routine screening," said Hawaii TSA Federal Security Director Nanea Vasta in the release. "The vigilance and swift action of (Officers) Camara and Bugarin, combined with their effective use of available tools like CCTV, demonstrate our commitment to mitigating threats in even the most hectic environments."

In June, an Indianapolis International Airport passenger was caught trying to hide a live smoke grenade inside a jar of peanut butter in his checked baggage.
