Pittsburgh Pride is culture shock for me. See which events I'd go to

Pride month events in Florida are nothing like the all-out celebration in Pittsburgh; the author wishes they could be in the Steel City for the fun this year.

Pride Month in Pittsburgh looks very different from what I'm used to.

For one thing, I'm from Central Florida, and our festivities don't take place in June. Instead, a parade and festival are scheduled on Florida's Space Coast for September. You might think the brutal summer sun would be starting to ease up a little by then, but we often don't see autumn weather until November.

It's also a little bit of a culture shock to see Pride celebrated on such a large scale throughout the city. In Florida, our pride parades and festivals have been under increasing scrutiny over the past several years because of state laws like SB 1438 — a law legislators said would restrict children from attending drag shows and punish those that allowed youth in, which LGBTQ advocates flagged as using broad, vague language. And while Pride Month is a time to come together, it's been harder for many members of the community to feel safe outside their homes as the state has repeatedly taken aim at LGBTQ people with rules and legislation targeting gender affirming care for both adults and children, bathroom access for trans people, the pronouns teachers go by at work and what names students use, classroom curriculum that mentions sex and gender, trans people's ability to change gender markers on legal documents and more.

The pride celebrations I've attended in Florida have always left me with a sense of connection to those around me. No matter our differences, I came away with more understanding and compassion for my neighbors, and the sight of so many strangers marching together left me with a sense of resiliency. I hope, as I spend this Pride Month packing up my belongings for my move to the Steel City, that the pride festivities around Pittsburgh bring the same feelings to you.

In addition to the main parade and festival, here are some of the events I would stop by.
