Hales says that the majority of sleepers prefer a medium to medium-firm mattress, but your sleeping position is what tips the scale. Side sleepers typically prefer a softer mattress, whereas back and stomach sleepers do better with a firmer mattress.

“Memory foam mattresses offer deeper contour and hug, making them great for side sleepers who want to engage more with the foam,” says Hales. These mattresses generally have less motion transfer and lower bounce, meaning they can lack edge support. 

Innerspring mattresses are more “traditional,” meaning they have high levels of bounce. These types of mattresses have much better edge support and offer a cooler sleep, thanks to their coil design. 

Hybrid mattresses are more balanced, as they feature more bounce than foam mattresses and have better edge support. “Because of the combination of foam and coils, you get good contour without sacrificing pressure relief,” shares Hales. However, they are often more expensive than all-foam or innerspring. 

Mattress lifespan, warranties, return policies

You should replace your mattress every seven to 10 years, according to experts. When a mattress is past its prime, it can lead to restless nights and even more aches and pains. But if you feel your mattress start to sag or begin waking up stiffer than usual, it could mean it's time for a replacement.
