The long awaited words of Roger Goodell finally came to fruition at the start of the 2026 NFL draft as Fernando Mendoza was selected No. 1 overall by the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night.

Mendoza, the former Indiana Hoosiers quarterback, led the team to a flawless 16-0 record as he helped the Hoosiers win their first National Championship in college football. In the process, Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy as the country's top player.

The Raiders were 3-14 in the 2025-26 season, finishing in last in the AFC West. While they had the same record as the Jets, the Raiders "won" the strength-of-schedule tiebreaker to earn the No. 1 overall pick. Geno Smith was the quarterback in 2025 but was released earlier this year as the Raiders have seemed committed to the Heisman-winner for some time now.

When is the 2026 NFL schedule release?

The 2026 NFL schedule has not yet been released. Teams do know their home and away opponents but not dates for those games. The NFL has not confirmed exactly when the full schedule will be released, but it typically falls in mid-May.

The NFL Preseason will kick off, as always, with the 2026 Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. This year, the Carolina Panthers will face the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday, Aug. 6.
