Cruise guest dies after losing control of scooter, driving off pier
An American passenger died after losing control of a scooter and entering the water at Carnival’s Celebration Key.

The incident took place on May 9 while its Carnival Celebration ship was visiting, the cruise line told USA TODAY. “Carnival teams responded, successfully retrieving her from the water,” the company said in an emailed statement. “Despite resuscitation efforts, she did not survive.”
The ship was on a week-long Eastern Caribbean cruise at the time, according to CruiseMapper.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a news release that initial investigations found that the guest, who was 88 years old and from the United States, reportedly lost control of the scooter and “is believed to have struck her head against the hull of the vessel before entering the water.” The cruise line and police did not share the guest’s identity.
Police and the coroner’s office took the decedent, according to the cruise line. “Our thoughts are with her family,” Carnival added.
The investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, police said.
The news comes after a Norwegian Cruise Line guest died in a suspected drowning at the cruise line’s Bahamas private island, Great Stirrup Cay, earlier this month.
